Things I have to do: preparing for the mock interview by researching curation, going back to the Martin barnes talk, and writing a manifesto for my niche interest. This is something that connects to this module project actually. I am realising that I have a pin-downlable interest, something I want to develop into writing so that I can draw from it during the mock interview & real interviews. It’s impermanence. The art that interests me most plays with impermanence. I am especially interested in physical/ material impermanence, and the display of things which cannot be guarded from change. Then I am also interested in the politics of impermanence, that 99% of exhibitions last for such a short amount of time, what does that do to the transmission and the meaning of an experience/ knowledge through exhibition. Plus, the politics of the few things which make it into permanent collections, and then, the politics of trying to permanently collect anything, to do anything permanent, to deny the flux of everything. So yeah, need to find a way of working this out in words, but I am interested in this on a number of levels, from the molecular and material, to the societal/ political/ structural, to philosophical ideas of mortality and existentialism, to a deeply personal relationship with change.

Still feel like I am missing something from my to-do list? I think partly it is because ‘preparing’ for something is a nebulous task, and so is writing a manifesto. It is not something you naturally sit down and do, beginning to end. So I guess I don’t really believe that I am going to do it, and that is what is making me feel unsatisfied. To sort this out I have got my calendar up, the ultimate form of accountability! I have emailed the SPCs, to arrange a consultation with Justin to order the wood, that’s the step which will unlock most other steps (for the live brief). In terms of the research prep and manifesto, can do one on either day of the weekend. Saturday I’ll look into the research discussion, Sunday I’ll start the process of preparing for the interview, because I’ll have more time to look into that over the week.

Aside from that, good that I had a quick chat with John, that means some of the Copeland stuff is moving. And good that Leah has written the email template and got all the names together, that’s also been weighing on me. So what else? What am I missing? I can’t print until I have paper, and the enlargers are booked out all next week. So my focus for next week will have to be the print auction, and making a new frame. Should order the glass in that case, although in some ways it makes sense to wait until I chat to Justin. If I have all of this free time, then I should just really go in hard on the combination of curation research for job and for Copeland, and that’s a good focus to have. I have a few weeks to really think about Copeland and answer a lot of the questions which will grow into problems down the line. I think the reason that this realisation has taken me so long to come to, is that I don’t want to do this side of things that much. But I have to! The first step is to make the list of things I have to do, so I’ll get to that own Monday/ Tuesday/ Wednesday depending on the other moving parts. And aside from that, I’ll just have to get on with it. Plus, messaging Naoise!
